Welcome to the Women's Surgery Center website! We trust you will find within our site a wealth of information about women's health, pelvic floor disorders and our extensive experience in management of complicated gynecologic conditions.
Unlike most gynecology offices, we specialize in minimally invasive gynecological laparoscopic and robotic surgery, which avoids a large abdominal incision by using a tiny telescope-like instrument inserted through the belly button. Conditions such as severe and extensive endometriosis involving the bowel, bladder, ureter, cul-de-sac, tube and ovary, female organ prolapse involving a dropping, bulging, or sagging vagina, uterus, bladder, or rectum, and urinary stress incontinence (urine leakage) can be treated successfully with less pain, fewer complications, and quicker recovery than traditional surgery.
The Director of the Center in Chattanooga, Dr. Robert S. Furr, was trained by Dr. C. Y. Liu. Dr. C. Y. Liu, is world-renowned as a pioneer and leader in the field of advanced gynecological endoscopic surgery for the treatment of urinary incontinence, laparoscopic paravaginal repair (bladder tack) for cystocele (bladder bulging into vagina), laparoscopic repair of enterocele (small bowel bulging into the vagina), and vaginal vault suspension for vaginal and uterine prolapse (vaginal bulging and dropping of uterus and cervix).
Dr. Furr continues this tradition of excellence and pioneering spirit in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery in Chattanooga. Dr. Furr was the first physician in Tennessee to perform a single-incision robotic hysterectomy, the first in the region to perform single-incision laparoscopic hysterectomy, the first to perform robotic sacrocolpopexy in Chattanooga and has extensive experience performing this "gold standard" procedure for correction of pelvic prolapse.
Specialized services include the following:
The Women's Surgery Center in Chattanooga is one of only 25 centers in the United States designated by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and also by the Society of Reproductive Surgeons to offer a fellowship training program for experienced gynecologists seeking to subspecialize in minimally invasive gynecologic endoscopic surgery. Dr. Furr is the Assistant Director of the training program and one of the most experienced laparoscopic surgeons in the southeast, specializing in laparoscopic and robotic treatment of female organ prolapse, severe endometriosis and urinary incontinence. Dr. Furr has authored chapters in national and international textbooks on minimally invasive surgery and is currently involved in multiple research projects regarding minimally invasive surgery. He has presented videos and research on laparoscopic techniques at national meetings.
